Usage of Social Media Analytics for Citizen Journalism

The growth of social media has made this platform an essential practice of communication. Social media is also a very popular platform to spread the breaking news events more rapidly than traditional media. So social media has become a good source for the citizens to communicate with the society more promptly than ever.  Social media contents now have a significant part of the digital content generated every day. Also provides a platform for voices that would reach a broader public than traditional media alone. Citizen microblogs, awareness campaign, and other user-generated contents are now getting more exposure in case of viral news and subjects.
The introduction of smartphone-enabled citizens to report instantly of any scene or breaking news than news teams. There are a number of platforms available to the public which they can use to upload content. Twitter Facebook are the key players. The list of news stories breaks in the social media before mainstream media. Famous examples include Whitney Houston’s death, which was reported on Twitter over an hour before any mainstream press picked up on it. Osama bin Laden’s raid and death, one of the biggest news stories of 2011, was reported unwittingly in tweets by a local IT consultant one day before Barack Obama announced it to the world. Additionally, the live chase for the men guilty of the Boston Marathon bombings in April 2013 saw news channels relying heavily upon the updates of citizens living in the area to establish what was happening. This was captured through videos, pictures, tweets, Skype calls, blogs and many more mediums.
Apps have been developed too. The Guardian’s ‘Guardian Witness’ app purposely targets citizen journalists, asking them to supply staff journalists with videos, photos, and stories of any event they seem newsworthy. Rbutr.com is another app that helps journalists out with public opinion, using crowdsourcing to provide arguments and counter-arguments on a number of different subjects. The situation can be a protest, rally or any deadly dangerous issues. Social Medias are empowering citizens to tell their stories like never before. This became clear with the live video earlier this month from Diamond Reynolds when she captured the aftermath of the shooting by a police officer of her boyfriend Philando Castile in Minnesota and streamed it live on Facebook. Public gathering information and distributing it to the public provides an opportunity for rich stories with lots of dimensions. These stories are influencing and encouraging people to be powerful in bringing new participants into the justice movement.
Social Medias are the huge source of data. Social media analytics tools can extract those data and report on the important issues. Governments can use the social media analytics tool to analyze public sentiment. And serve their citizens according to their needs and wants. Citizen journalism helps the government to get the root level information that helps the Governments to oversee the condition of peoples’ daily life.
